SMS Tutorials :: Creating an Advertisement

An advertisement defines an instance where a certain package is distributed to a certain collection.   You will select the package, program within that package assign it to a collection.  Finally, you will define when this advertisement should run.

Creating an Advertisement

  1. To create an advertisement, right-click Advertisements in the SMS Console. Then select New | Advertisement.   You should name the advertisement in the format of "<package name> to <collection name> Advertisement".

Then select the appropriate package and program within the package from the drop down menus.  Select the appropriate collection that you want the advertisement to go to.  Check the Include members of subcollections box if you would like the advertisement to apply to any subcollections that may be defined under the selected collection.  Otherwise, the advertisement will only to the machines explicitly in the top level collection.  (In most cases, the top level collection will contain all members of the subcollection anyways so you may leave this box unselected.)

    Click the
    Schedule tab.

  2. In most cases, you will want to start the advertisement immediately.  Do this by clicking on the indicated Starbust button shown below.  In addition, you may define an expiration date.  Priority should generally stay at Medium.

  3. By default, the current time and date will be selected.  If you would like to select another date and time, click Schedule and you will see the Schedule window below.  Otherwise, click OK.

  4. If you clicked Schedule in the last step and would like to schedule a certain time and date and whether the advertisement recurrs, you may do so in this window.  Click OK.

  5. On the Advanced Client, you may select different options for whether the installation runs directly from the Distribution Point or whether the files will be downloaded to the machine first and then run.  (This is analogous to whether you would run an installer file directly from a network share i.e. from \\server\share\installer.msi OR download it first and run the installer from C:\downloads\installer.msi.)  Generally, you would choose the option to Download program from distribution point for larger installations to avoid excessive system utilization on the SMS server.  The two options you select on this page should be the same.  (i.e. options are set to Run program from distribution point, etc.

Click OK to finish the Advertisement.

The advertisement should now to active and will begin pushing the package to the systems in the collection you defined shortly.  Depending on network traffic and/or SMS server load, it should take between 15 and 60 minutes for the package to get to all systems in the collection.
