 SMS Tutorials :: The SMS Client

Before you can start to manage workstations using SMS, you must first install the SMS Advanced Client.  The advanced client is used for Windows 2000 and above and is the only client that is supported by ITS.

There are many ways to install the client.  These include:

  • Client Push Installation Wizard using the SMS Console

  • Group Policy Software Installation

  • Scripts (login, startup, etc.)

  • Included within an OS image

  • Manually (hands-on) from the local machine

The easiest method of deploying the SMS client is using the Client Push Installation Wizard.  However, there are two requirements that must be met before the client will install will work.

  • The Client Push Installation Wizard uses an AD user account called SMSremote_UI1, which must be a member of the local administrator's group of your client machines.  See this article for instructions on how to handle this.

  • Windows Firewall port exceptions must include: UDP 137 and 138 and TCP 139 and 445. (These are the standard File and Print Sharing exceptions.)

These requirements may be defined in a Group Policy Object

  You may do this directly from the SMS console by following the procedure below.

{To see a Flash demo of this procedure, click here}

  1. In the SMS Console, right-click on your root departmental collection | select All Tasks | Install Client.  The following window will appear.  Click Next.

  2. Select the radio button by Advanced Client.  Click Next.

  3. The default options are fine in this window.  Click Next.

  4. Click Finish.

The SMS client will be installed on the selected workstation or selected collection.  However, this may take as long as 30 minutes before the clients and installed and even longer before the installations are reflected in the SMS Console.
