SMS Tutorials

These tutorials were created with departmental administrators at the University of Iowa in mind.  If you are interested in exploring the possibility of using Microsoft Systems Management Server to manage the workstations in your department or college, contact the Enterprise Client Management Group and we will set up an SMS demonstration and test environment for you.  You may also contact Steve Carneol directly at 319.335.5842 or via e-mail at steve-carneol@uiowa.edu.

What is Microsoft Systems Management Server?

Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 (SMS) is a powerful IT tool that allows administrators to remotely manage large groups of workstations over a Local Area Network.  This management includes application deployment, security patch management, asset management and a suite of remote tools, including remote control.  As an administrator, you will probably notice that SMS will seem somewhat unfamiliar unless you've worked on previous versions of SMS.  A certain amount of time will need to be spent just getting used to how the menus and properties sheets are arranged in the SMS Console.   Below are some brief tutorials on some of the more common tasks an SMS administrator will perform.
